Additional Info
I have a suspicion that I delivered boy/girl fraternal twins on August 25 or 26 1983, but was sent home with only the boy. I have no idea what happened to the girl. So here is my story. On August 25,1983, I gave birth at Riverside General Hospital in Riverside, California. I was awake during the C-section and watched as my son, James was suctioned, weighed (9 lbs 1.5 oz), diapered and swaddled. I was married but my husband was not allowed in the operating room. After the delivery, the baby was taken to the nursery and I was taken to the recovery room. After that is when things got very strange. The recovery room nurse wheeled me on a gurney to my postpartum room but said that we were going to stop by the nursery so I can see my baby. I was happy because I was anxious to hold him. Once we got there, the recovery room nurse told the nursery nurse to bring out the Moorhouse baby, so I watched as she removed a very small naked baby from an incubator and wrap it in a blanket. She tried to hand me the baby as she said 'here she is, your little GIRL'! The baby had one hand poking through the blanket so I put my index finger in her palm and she wrapped her little fingers around it. I said 'she's cute, but she's not mine'. The nurses insisted that she was mine and reassured me that she was small but healthy. Then it went from strange to bizarre when they insisted on putting the baby to my breast for a feeding. I said that I was not going to breastfeed someone else's baby. Then they began arguing with me. Finally she asked me why I felt that the baby was not mine and I told her '1st my baby was a boy, 2nd my baby was twice the size 3rd my baby had a head full of dark hair. The nurse asked me how I could be so sure if I was asleep during the c-section. I told her that I was awake during the entire birth. In disbelief she shrieked 'YOU WERE?' I said yes. With that the recovery nurse who up until now seemed to be siding with the other nurse, told her to bring out the Moorhouse BOY! She put the baby girl back in the incubator and brought out my son who I immediately recognized as my baby. The next day when I could get up, I walked down to the nursery to check on my son and the mystery baby girl. My son was sleeping sound in his isolette but the tiny peachfuzzed baby girl was no where in sight. So, who was she? Where was she? Was her last name Moorhouse like my son?
Over the years these questions nagged at me. I always thought the whole incident was fishy and I always suspected deception of some sort. The main reason why I believe this is because both nurses changed their tune very fast when I let them know that I was actually awake during the C-section rather than asleep. The second I mentioned that she immediately went back into the nursery to get the Moorhouse boy. So why??? Possibility #1 I actually had boy/girl fraternal twins. Possibility # 2 They tried to switch my healthy baby boy with a sick baby girl. Possibility # 3 it was simply an innocent mistake. I am leaning toward possibility # 1 with a motive of black market adoption because late in the first trimester my doctor said that my uterus measured larger than average. He said there was a possibility that it was twins but when he did an ultrasound 1 month later he said that there was only one baby. As it turned out, my regular ob/gyn did not perform the C-section. Because of insurance changes we delivered at a different hospital at the last minute. Also it is possible that the other baby was born on August 26th due to the fact that it was already after midnight by the time I left recovery. Anyway if anyone has any information or had a similar experience at the same hospital during the same time I would really love to hear about it because this has been bothering me for years.
