Additional Info
I am the granddaughter of Olin Bomar, who was born 24 Apr 1910. He was adopted by Adelbert (Bert) and Bertha Bomar. The birth certificate with his adopted parents' names (I have a copy) was filed December 31 1910. The adoption likely happened in Polk, and he seems to have been born in Des Moines. Per my Aunt Darla Bomar, Olin's oldest living child, Olin was put up for adoption by his mother because he had scarlet fever and rheumatoid fever and his mother could not bear to watch him die. Per a vaguely remembered conversation 30-odd years ago with my grandmother Evelyn Bomar (Olin's wife), he may have had contact with or at least knowledge of his birth family, because she told me he had an older sister or half-sister and that his mother's last name may have been Taylor (either maiden or married. Or maybe it's the sister's name). I wonder if this may have been an 'in-family' adoption because according to the story, Great grandma Bertha immediately went straight to the back of the orphanage (or hospital - don't know which) where the sickest babies were kept and she picked up baby Olin and insisted firmly on adopting him even though the nurses advised against it as they thought Olin was dying. From what we can tell from the DNA tests, he was way more British than we were expecting him to be, and there's a guy in New Zealand coming up as a second cousin who says all his ancestors came straight from Britain, and he doesn't know why he's related to someone in Iowa. I know it's unlikely you'll find much if anything at this late date, but what the heck. I was also going to call the Iowa Bureau of Vital Records, since they apparently have some kind of document at their office I need to fill out that I can't download from their web site. I don't have much other information but feel free to call or email me; any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
