Reet was born in Estonia to Salme Jõepere, who was widowed during the war, as her diabetic husband was unable to get insulin. She remarried a former Estonian teacher she met in the DP camp in Germany, who adopted Reet. From there, the young family moved to the Buffalo area. Reet's mother disapproved of her relationship with Mr. Kampschoff and Reet severed ties with her. We have no idea what became of her, although her half brother searched for her in vain in the 1990s. I am his widow, Eric Jon Gold's aunt by marriage, and mother to his three cousins, all boys.
